To help you get the most out of your studies, we invite you to set a goal for your studies.
Why have a goal?
- A goal directs attention and effort towards activities related to the goal and away from ones having nothing to do with said goal.
- It regulates the intensity of effort.
- In many situations it enables us to be more persistent in the strive of a particular outcome.
- It encourages us to look for different strategies to achieve a wanted result, both among already existing as well as new ideas.
Why is this so important?
- Professional athletes, successful entrepreneurs, scientists and other high achievers – all of them set goals. This gives them a long-term vision and the motivation to achieve it. It focuses all their knowledge, helps them to control their time and energy resources, and allows them to reach their full potential and achieve great heights.
- By setting clear and specific goals, you can continuously monitor your progress and take pride in your achievements which previously may have seem out of reach. Achieving your goals will increase your self-confidence, your understanding of your limits and strengths.
A study goal can help you on your journey throughout your year at university, for example when choosing your individual study subjects, finding a new activity, internship or workplace, or studying every day.
Here’s a template to help you set your study goal quickly and efficiently. Of course, you can always adjust it to suit your needs and new insight or priorities as your studies progress.

If you ever face any difficulties in evaluating your priorities or setting your goals, you can always ask:
- Vilnius University Career Centre, where you can get career advice or take part in career training;
- Vilnius University Mentoring, where you can get a mentor.
Don’t forget to stay tuned to VU SR news as we will be organising Goal Raising workshops this September!
